Dust, bird droppings and pollution build up quickly on solar panels in India, and dirty panels let less light reach the cells. Cleaning them is simple, but the wrong method or product can scratch the glass or leave a film. Here's how to clean solar panels safely.
Safety first
- Follow the panel manufacturer's cleaning instructions, and check what your warranty allows.
- Clean from the ground or a safe access point wherever possible. Rooftop work needs proper fall protection.
- Clean early in the morning or in the evening, when the panels are cool. Cold water on hot glass can stress it.
What to avoid
- Abrasive pads and powders: they can scratch the glass and its coating.
- High-pressure washers: most manufacturers advise against them.
- Harsh solvents and strong acids or alkalis: they can damage seals and frames.
- Leaving hard water to dry: it can leave spots. Rinse with clean, soft water if you can.
Step by step
- Remove loose dust with a soft brush or a dry, soft cloth.
- Mix your cleaner. For glass, the SOLVIS® cleaning guide uses 1 part SOLVIS® to 20 parts water. For solar cleaning contracts, ask us for the recommended dilution.
- Apply gently with a soft sponge or microfibre cloth, or a soft brush on an extension pole.
- Rinse with clean water.
- Dry or squeegee to avoid water spots.
What the lab test showed
SGS Institut Fresenius tested SOLVIS® ecopower on a monocrystalline solar module in 2023. It left no visible change or residue on the panel, both at room temperature and after 8 hours of heat. You can read the report on our Proof page.
How often should you clean solar panels?
It depends on where the panels are. Dusty areas, sites near roads or construction, and places with lots of birds need more frequent cleaning. Many owners check their panels monthly and clean when they see a layer of dust, or when output drops.
For solar O&M and facility teams
If you maintain solar installations at scale, one cleaner that also handles your floors, glass and equipment simplifies supply. SOLVIS® isn't classified as hazardous under the EU CLP rules and isn't regulated as dangerous goods for transport, which makes it easy to store on site.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use any detergent to clean solar panels?
Use a gentle cleaner that won't leave a film, and follow the manufacturer's instructions. In an SGS test, SOLVIS® left no visible change or residue on a solar module.
Can I use a pressure washer on solar panels?
Most manufacturers advise against high-pressure washing. Use a soft brush or sponge and a low-pressure rinse.
When is the best time to clean solar panels?
Early morning or evening, when the panels are cool.
